Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying these drugs need to be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
